What temp is best for me?
All hair is not the same! Make sure when heat styling your hair you know what type of hair you have and what temperature to set your iron on. Too high of heat can lead to breakage, too low of heat won't produce the desired effect. A common misconception with heat-treating hair is the higher the heat, the faster and better the results would be, but that is not true. Below are the recommendations I found useful.
- Dry damaged hair will need less heat than healthy non-damaged hair ranging between 200°F to 300°F
- Thin hair should stay under 290°F
- Fine hair types 250-340°F work best.
- Coarse, thick hair 400-450°F for best results
What is your favorite hairstyle?
Did you know that you can achieve so many great hairstyles with a flat iron? I grew up in the '80s. Between my mom, aunts, and sister, all styles were a go! There were fewer options back then from what I can remember. We crimped, curled, and straightened. Each style had its own tool.
My sister's crimper was SO COOL! It gave the perfect zigzag style. My mom's collection of curling irons all had different barrel sizes and made achieving the perfect curl possible. My aunt could do anything with her hair and was an inspiration, to say the least. I remember her getting out my mom's ironing board and a water bottle and using the clothes iron on her hair to straighten it. I never quite got the hang of fixing hair. I couldn't get past curling it in the wrong direction and giving myself fish hook bangs. I had a meltdown every single time!
How do I get my favorite style with a Flat Iron?
Straight
For straight hair with a flat iron go down each section with the iron to straighten it evenly. Be sure not to twist the iron or you will end up with bends. Higher heat for this method.
Curled Under- Straighten your hair as usual but curl in at the bottom to curl under super cute with a bobbed style.
Winged Out (Flip Bob)- Straighten your hair as usual but at the end of your hair curl out for the winged look.
Loose Curls- You will want to start twisting the iron around the 1/3 to 1/2 way down the shaft.
