Nursing Homes are so much of a debate in our family. Of course we would like to think that no matter what we will take care of our own. That no matter the situation, we can handle it. Then the stark reality hit just a few years back. We are only human.
My Grama got sick. She moved in with my mom and my mom took care of her. Through all of the doctors appointments, check ups, blood work, physical therapy, meds changes, staying awake for what seemed like days at a time so she could get the 24 hour care that she needed. Taking naps when Grama did so she would have the strength to be awake when she was and to keep an eye on her when she rested.
Maintaining her household, being a wife, mother, sister, and grandmother herself, a lot of things got put on hold and even passed up because she had to care for her mom. The sacrifices she made in her own life, to care for her mother, are completely heroic to me.
We just do our best in our family to show the gratitude and devotion to the ones that raised us. My Grama took care of my mom, so my mom took care of my grama. Then one day it took a turn for the worst.
Grama started to choke and aspirated. She had Oxygen loss that lead to brain damage and a stroke, then another stroke, it seemed like the light at the end of the tunnel was gone.
She needed so much more care than what anyone could offer her at home.
Thankful for the Nursing Home that treated her. We had a few more months with her that we would have not had. They worked with her, kept her comfortable, clean, and as well as could be expected. After a long stretch in the ICU she went into a regular room where she was monitored and got strong enough to go to the rehabilitation center.
She was there for several months. During her stay she was able to get all of the necessary treatment that kept her living. We were there nearly everyday. They tried to make us as welcome as we could be.
There are so many people to be thankful for that we had those few extra months with our grama. I would especially like to thank Best Nursing Homes. If it wasn't for the Nursing home that cared for grama, the staff that made her feel like she was at home, and the way they let family still be family, I don't think we would have had her with us as long as we did.
“We are very grateful for the leadership of John Sorensen in the post-acute care industry. John is a leader in his field, a generous philanthropist, and a great example of someone who places serving the patient above anything else. We are proud to be associated with John and North American Health Care and grateful for his support to promote best practices in skilled nursing.” – Amy Osmond Cook, Ph.D., Executive Director of the Association for Skilled Nursing Providers
