How many of you know someone that is dealing with limited mobility or a loved one with limited mobility? I know first hand the struggle of watching someone I love so much be dependent on a wheel chair. I know it was hard on him and the adjustments were hard. BUT, we did it!
As most of you know, Aron was in a very bad accident a few years ago that left him wheelchair bound. It was an extremely challenging change in our lives. With intense therapy, we eventually got him back on his feet. It has had lasting damage, we are waiting now for the surgery on his feet. Since this surgery is not an emergency, we are trying to be as prepared as possible.
He is walking on his own now but when the surgery comes, he will be wheelchair bound again with 0 load bearing for a 1 year minimum. We want to be ready.
We have modified our home by adding on a large ramp. I almost flipped him off of the old one. We even have a little edge on the bottom so I can't run him off of it. The old walkway had a step it the end, I couldn't pull him over it and got his wheel chair stuck with his head less than a foot from the ground. I still haven't lived that one down.
When there is someone that you are caring for and they are unable to do things for them self the way they usually would, it's hard to make sure you are doing it all the right way. The next step is the car. Finding a way to comfortably get him where we need to go. He has had so many bad feelings of thinking he is a burden on us because he is not as independent as he used to be.
That is not the case, I love him so much, but his insecurity as a man is totally understandable. What he doesn't realize is I would carry him if I could. I would bring the rest of the world to him, if I could. I would do anything to make him more comfortable and more confident.
That's why I am so happy for amazing companies like NMEDA. NMEDA offers great solutions for people like us that need to be not limited. We have a family, kids, things we want to do that don't need to be put on hold. We function fully as a family and do not want to be limited because of circumstance, we are stronger than that.
NMEDA has so many options for everything we need or could possibly want. Either he can ride right into the vehicle or we can us the lift to store the chair in the back. Either way, he still has his sense of freedom and independence.
We are ready to move forward with our plans and are so excited to get to our local NMEDA QAP and see what is available. They have locations all over the place so it won't be hard. They offer vans; full and mini, trucks, suv's, lifts and chairs. It is everything all in one place.
They even have access to the information that would help in purchasing if you need it like government funding and rebates. They even offer wheelchair safety tips. This is an amazing resources for people like us that don't want to be slowed down.
