Relocating To Australia

Have you ever considered  moving? We have. We moved cross country a few years ago and it was a nice breath of fresh air. This time what about something big? Something Far, what about a new country all together? What about a new continent?

Australia is a country, and continent, surrounded by the Indian and Pacific oceans. Its major cities – Sydney, Brisbane, Melbourne, Perth, Adelaide – are coastal, but its capital, Canberra, is inland and nicknamed the "Bush Capital." The country is known for its Sydney Opera House, Great Barrier Reef, the vast Outback (interior desert wilderness) and unique animal species including kangaroos and duck-billed platypuses.

There are so many reasons for a big move. The adventure would be the most exciting part for me. Lifestyle changes like job, marriage, family, or school would be great reasons for the move. Health reasons are another reason for a big move like that.

There are so many things to put into perspective when making that kind of move. One of the most interesting things to me is the weather. Did you know the weather is opposite of the Northern Hemisphere?

*December to February is summer
*March to May is autumn
*June to August is winter
*September to November is spring.

That is mind blowing to me. Can you imagine how backwards that would feel being from the US!  I have no idea how I didn't know this until now. My birthday is around Easter every year, it would be so awesome to experience Labor Day weather for my special day of the year!

There are so many really nice locations in Australia. Finding the perfect one for you is just a little bit of research away. Check out this article, it will be very helpful!

If you are picking Australia for the climate and temperature here is a brief description of each area, I think in a lot of ways, the weather is close to what we would expect here, just at different times of the year.

New South Wales climate is broad from the mild Sydney weather to the dry heat of the bush in the north western corner of the state.
Victoria climate is also broad despite its small size but the southern position of Victoria means it tends to be a bit cooler and wetter.
Queensland climate due to it’s size has a wide variation, from the tropical coasts in the north to the highlands of the south east, were snow has fallen.
South Australia climate varies from the mild wetter regions of the south east coast and Mount Lofty Ranges to the hot and dry interior.
Western Australia climate is one of the most diverse in the country due to its size, from the tropical north to the temperate south west coastal areas.
Tasmania climate is temperate maritime with four distinct seasons, from the warm sunny days of summer to the sudden storms of winter.
ACT and Canberra climate is relatively dry and continental with marked seasonal and daily temperature changes.
Northern Territory climate is in two zones, the tropical north which includes Darwin, and the desert environment of Central Australia.

Picking a location in Australia would be an amazing adventure. Two places I think that have so much interesting facts and seem to be so much fun and ever more exciting, so different than anything I have ever known are Sydney and Alice Springs.

Sydney is the capitol of New South Wales. There is an beautiful Sydney Harbor Opera House with a sail like architectural design. There is also a really cool tower called the Sydney Tower; The Skywalk. It offers a 360 view of the whole area!

Sydney is a coastal area and has a wide variety of year round activities. With an average summer temperature of 26°C (78°F) swimming, boating, and skiing would make such fun adventures.

Alice Springs is in a desert setting with so many natural wonders. It has beautiful views! The natural landmarks like the Kings Canyon would be a great place to visit and spend a few days hiking, biking, and just taking in the beautiful views. In the summer average temperatures in Alice Springs range from 20 - 35°C (60 - 95°F), and can climb to around 40°C (104°F).

If you are traveling with children, finding schools and daycare would be a top priority in location. If they are in sports or music or some other preforming arts, that would be another thing to look for.

Did you know that Australia has a great variety of educational programs. They have over  1,200 institutions and 22,000 courses to choose from. Australia has the third highest number of international students in the world. That is pretty remarkable, especially in contrast with the population comparison.

Finding the perfect neighborhood with kids around the same age as yours is something we think is very important. Stuff to do that is family friendly like going zoo, aquarium, park, and amusement part are things that we would look for.

If you are making the decision for work, being closer to the major market cities would be a better choice. The unemployment rate is only at  5%, finding a job is fairly easy. I know that would be a big deciding factor for us. I wouldn't want to move to a whole new country without being able to find gainful employment.

If you are moving for health related reasons, one thing you may find optimistic, and might not know is that healthcare is so much better!  Medicare provides basic health cover for all Australians and still offers private sectors as well.

We think that is an amazing change of pace. Aron has health issues that keep him in and out of the doctors office all of the time. It would be a huge change for us to not have to worry about whether or not the concerns are covered. I love that!

If you are thinking of moving to Australia, I hope these resources are helpful.

Thanks for stopping by!

  1. I've always wanted to visit Australia. Sydney would offer enough to see for a vacation, but Melbourne looks gorgeous too! Maybe some day we 'll be able to afford a trip and explore some of the unique scenery.

  2. Australia is one of my bucket-list countries that I would LOVE to visit!! But now, you've got me wanting to live there! I am sure the crime rate is down too - which is also a point for the positive side! My daughter & her family lived in London for almost 2 years. She summed up the experience in one word: RAINY!
Maybe one day we can still visit there. THANKS for the info!!

  3. There are many factors to consider before moving out especially when the distance is far away. You would need to book early the movers, self storage, and other logistical arrangements. If no prior and comprehensive planning is done, problems could arise in the future and you will be tied down instead of settling down at the new place.

  4. Some good tips above, but we also have dozens of vital tips for moving and relocation to Australia, as well as cross country interstate moves around Australia. There are many different factors to consider than just moving from suburb to suburb within a city.
