Lighting a living room doesn’t just mean you should be placing lamps on the floor. In order to create a space that looks good, allows you to see when you are watching the TV, or do other things in the space, and in order to make it look properly designed, there are also other lighting options you should look into. Here are a few examples of ways you can/should be adding light to your living room.
Adding Layers Of Light
In order to make a room be well lit, it should contain three types of light; task light, accent light and ambient light. In this specific living room you have all three. Recessed lighting is placed in the ceiling as a way to cast light down on the room. Wall-mounted lights cast down light to showcase things like artwork as well as placement in cabinets to light them up. The last type, allows for a floor lamp next to the couch that will allow for some light reading or relaxing.
Track Lighting On The Ceiling
A lot of people really love track lighting because it stays off of the floor which means you can utilize the floor space for more important things, but also because it has a really cool sleek look to it. Track lighting can also be moved down the track or angled so that it lights up or accents certain parts of the space. Add in two tables with smaller table lamps and you have a really good fit for a smaller living room.
Soft Accent Lights
If you have a custom built media cabinet or bare rafters in your living room, using soft accent lights is a good option for you. It lights up the room and yet does so in a softer way than something like track lighting would. Accent lights can also be dimmed on a dimmer switch so they don’t cause a glare on the television set.
Hanging Pendants
Hanging pendants come in all sorts of designs and styles, as well as colors and materials. In this room, which mainly uses tans, golds and reds, the pendant lights are made from glass shades and a wrought iron finish around the shades and a wrought iron chain that attaches them to the ceiling. Since this specific living room is a little larger they have decided to use two of these hanging pendants one on each side of the room. But, they also included recessed lighting around the crown molding to add even more light, as well as a few candles and a fireplace which add ambiance.
Square Shaped Track
A lot of people think that track lighting only comes in one track or one style. But, actually you can also find shapes. This very rectangular living room uses a rectangular track lighting shape that goes the entire length of the room. It looks really nice, and because most of the colors in the room are neutral like white, the white light goes really well with it. It in turn leaves you with a really coordinated, balanced and clean look. Perfect for a modern or contemporary living room.
Chandeliers
Unlike hanging pendants that go with almost any style of decor, chandeliers tend to be more for traditional settings. These are super classy and traditional. They tend to be in the middle of a living space, can be placed on a dimmer switch and are very fancy looking. Chandeliers don’t offer a ton of light though, so you might want to use these in a living space that has a lot of natural light and then you can use the chandelier for ambiance and looks in terms of style.
Firelight
Firelight in terms of a real fireplace or candles creates a really cozy, romantic and stylish lighting option. This is also perfect for a larger living room with lots of windows and natural light coming in. The candles can be placed on a candle tray that is hung from the ceiling. If you want to be super safe, don’t use real candles, use those ones that use batteries. They look exactly like real candles, without the flame!
Paper Lanterns
These are also very cool looking and add a certain sense of style and panache to a room. However, because the light is encircled around the paper, the light you receive from it might not be very bright. This can be used in the middle of a room like you would with a chandelier and would look good with a Japanese style home or even traditional depending on how you play it up!
Any and all of these lighting options are good. In the end, its going to depend on what you plan to use the room for, what your budget is, and what your style is!

I believe the more lighting you have makes the room look bigger than what it is
