I haven't had the joy of the physical end of a period since I was 26, after the hysterectomy. Some say I'm lucky. Well, let me tell ya, I still have the hormonal end of it. I still have my cry-bag days, my OMG I look like an old hag- days, and all of the other wonderful things that came along with a period; just not the bleeding to death part.
So yes, if you think emotional waves with nothing to show for it or warning is luck well, ya, I am lucky.
With having 2 girls, I wanted to be able to show them everything about being a woman. That's one thing I can't. It's not a familiar thing in our house. I tell them. Cassie is 10 and the questions she comes up with and the scenarios she comes up with, floor me. There is nothing spectacular about "that time of the month".
My 15-year-old is a veteran by now and is more of a "whatever- it's no big deal" kind of young lady. While my 10-year old hasn't started yet and neither has her friends but, they all want to. They want that "just in case" pad in their purses. It's so funny. When it gets here, she'll change her tune. I am expecting the most theatrical/dramatic reaction from her.
I don't want them to be embarrassed over anything that comes so natural. I mean, really, it's not like it can be avoided. It's going to happen. So, they need to be prepared.
The inspiration for this post came from MaskIt. They offered me a product, well, several products for review that take the embarrassing messy part out of the period. I was so excited about it because it gave me a tangible excuse to talk to my girls. That works so much better than just saying "Hey, I was thinking about your period today, let's talk".
MaskIt offers wrappers for feminine products to cover the sight and odor or the used products. It's really cool. When I was their age, I didn't want to share with anyone that may come in after me that I was on my period. So wrapping the used ones in wads of toilet paper to cover the sight but did nothing for the smell.
These white little envelopes make a perfect size wrapper for the aftermath. What makes it even better, they are like a little glove so it's completely mess-less. It's labeled with insert hand, fingers in one side, thumb in the other. Pull your MaskIt over the top, peel off the sticky strip and seal it. It's that easy. It's just like taking off a pair of gloves, maybe takes 2 seconds but it has a lot of words to explain it.
This makes the inevitable a lot less stressful. What else is awesome about it is, it's a good idea for one but it's totally doable. The little envelopes fit easily in a pocket or purse or just leave them in a box in the bathroom. These are made from alternative plastics and from plant-based products. It's pretty neat.
I received this for free in exchange for an honest, unbiased review. If you have any questions about this product, please feel free to email us directly at [email protected] or [email protected]
