For the beach I just got to review a compact light weight Beach Blanket. It really is compact and what makes it really cool is it comes in it's own bag. This thing is big. 6ft by 7ft and has so many awesome features.

The stakes are great for the windy days so you don't have to worry about the corners rolling up.
It's sand free because the sand wont stick to the fabric, it 100% parachute nylon just not made to parachute with :)
What makes it even cooler in my opinion is that it's big enough for 2 people not just one person. I like to snuggle up or lay down comfortably. Me and Aron aren't petite little flowers, we can take up some space and with the 6' X 7' blanket, we have plenty of room.
With that in mind we have enough room for our legs and out
Some other things that I have reviewed lately that you might like are the Portable Inflatable Lounge Lounger Beach Sofa Dream Chair. These guys fill up with air and that's it. They are also super compact for easy travel. I love the stuff that takes up little room.

I thought the same thing - that it would be great for a picnic as well. It would be great to keep in the trunk of your car during the non-winter months.
