Recently we had some changes around here. I not sure if you remember reading about it but Aron had to have his big toe amputated at the end of summer. It was a pretty big deal but, ultimately for the better and to give him a better quality of life.
A little bit of the back story.
About 10 years ago he had a lawn mower accident that left him with a very damaged foot. The blade ran right up between his big and second toe and caused a lot of problems. Even though the outside eventually healed, he had lasting damage that was not reparable.
His toe didn't bend up or down or move side to side. It was painful to walk and even more painful to bump into anything. After a decade of dealing with it and the hopes that it would get better, we made the decision accepting the potential consequences to have it removed.
We knew to expect that he would have balance issues because it was a big toe and with his diabetes that it would take longer than a normal person to heal. So he went for it. The surgery went fast and better than expected. His toe hole is almost healed.
Believe it or not, his balance was never an issue. He can walk without having sandals on for the first time since we met. He can walk!! We are so grateful for the surgeon and medical team that took care of him before, during, and after the procedure.
We have lived in this home for over 2 years and he hasn't been able to explore our area. He can walk without help but still a little nervous to try the trails without help. That's where Pinnacle comes in.
We were able to work with them on a review for the Pinnacle Gear Hiking Poles (Pair of poles). These are an awesome set of hiking poles that he will be able to use to help keep himself secure while he's walking.
I have not given them to him yet. I am making it a surprise. The features are what really made me want to work with them.
- Lightweight Aircraft grade Aluminum-
- Ergonomic, comfortable grips
- Wrist strap
- Fully adjustable from 25.5 in to 53 in
- Anti- shock
This will help him be more confident and be so therapeutic to him. We live in a wooded but absolutely beautiful area. We have wildlife and natural wonders that can only be experienced by being out in it.
I'm not expecting him to walk the entire mountainside on his first trip off the side walk but by being able to have confidence and extra stability he will be able to gain some of his independence and freedom again.
It's the little things that get taken for granted. To be honest, it's not a thought of "Can I make it?" if one of the kids lose something in the yard and i have to go find it or if one of the dogs get out and I have to go find them. A simple task as going down the driveway to check the mail. It's a gravel driveway.
The Pinnacle Gear Hiking Poles (Pair of poles) will be giving him something back that he lost a decade ago in that accident, himself.
Thanks Pinnacle for working with us on such a personal journey.
