So, If you don't mind me asking, what do you spend on self-maintenance? Do you allow yourself a weekly budget, monthly budget, or just squeeze it in when the budget allows? There are so many things that I pay other people to do that I could save so much money if I could just learn to do it myself. Waxing is definitely one of them.
I usually go get my eyebrows and lip waxed once a month or sooner depending on how the hair growth is. And guess what, it stressed me out. I have to put my face in other peoples hands. I have some horror stories from the salon and self-beautification so, it's a touchy subject for me.
I'll give it to you straight, the reason why I go into wax in the first place. I have had some real doozy of attempts at fixing my eyebrows to make them look nice. My first attempt I was about 15 and had no business altering my appearance in that kind of way but my friends were and they had such pretty brows, I wanted in on it.
I asked my mom for her tweezers and I set in on a personal adventure I'll never forget. I started with the length, I used a pencil to mark the length by angling the line out just a tad from the outer corners of my eyes. Simple enough.
I didn't have a magnifying mirror but the bathroom mirror was so amazing at showing me all of my imperfections, who would need to see closer with that blunt lighting. You still can't hide a second of age from her bathroom mirror. I started in as confident as ever.
The painful plucking of one to two hairs at a time was something for a warrior woman, not a freshman. I wasn't cut out for all of this, I knew it immediately but once I started there was no going back. I was in professional mode, this journey had just begun! My elbows on the counter for stability, my face 4 inches from the mirror glass, I was going to have those eyebrows that everyone would be looking at. Boy, was I right? Just not for the same reason I was expecting.
After hours of perfecting my new handmade look, I took a step back to admire a job well done. I mean, I know I have been staring at myself for at least 2 hours with my face nearly touching the mirror, I was ready, I felt like I could accomplish anything.
My jaw-dropping finished look was definitely one for the books. I had a nice clean arch line on the bottom alright. But the bottom was so close to the top. I plucked them so thin and high, I'm pretty sure the bottom was also called the top by then.
I was shocked. My eyebrows were so high, I looked like I was surprised and judging my own self. I mean, my eyebrows were so high and thin, it looked like I ordered a McBrow and served it to my forehead. There was nothing I could do about it unless I just shaved it off and started over. That wasn't happening. I just hast had to wait it out while I was letting them grow back in.
I told myself after that I would just leave it to the professionals. That being said, it was well over a decade before I decided to have my eyebrows done again. I was 28 to be exact. It was the day before I married Aron. It was at a little salon in Manhattan IL and they did an amazing job.
Even though I have had some bad outcomes, I still left it to the pro's. No matter what they did, it would still look better if someone else would do it for me.
About 2 years ago, I decided I could save some money by doing it myself again. I had been going to the salon for a few years and completely understood the process. I got some peel off wax strips for do it yourself waxing. I had Abby in there to help in case I lost my nerve.
I got out the waxing strip and laid it in my hand and started rubbing it so it would get warm enough to stick to my face. It seemed everything was going great. I had my strip in place and I was ready to let er rip. This was way better than my first attempt because it was going to be all of the hair at once instead of one hair at a time.
I took a deep breath and attempted the pull. The only thing that came out was a scream. The wax strip had a great hold on my eyebrow hair but I didn't have a good enough grip to get it off my face. The wax strip or the hair. By this time, my eyes are watering heavily in pain and Abby is standing with her legs crossed bent over scream laughing offering to give it a yank. I declined her offer at that time.
I tried everything to get that strip off of my eyebrow. Rubbing it to try to heat it up again. Blowdrying it to heat it up, nothing worked. I was fully invested. Unless I wanted to go to town with a wax strip on my eyebrow. which was not an option, I had to let Abby do it.
By this time, she was hysterical. We were not feeling the same emotions at all. I started laughing because it hurt so bad. It took a few big yanks to get it all the way off of there. I didn't have the end result we had worked so hard to get yet again. The wax strip was on there, it was not about to let go of me. But when it finally did come off, it didn't take barely any hair with it at all.
I will not be trying the over the counter warming wax strips again, ever.
So here we are at 37. 22 years after my first attempt at fixing my own eyebrows, getting ready to try it again. This time I have what I need to get the job done. I just got my own wax pot with the wax pot from Skinosm.
The kit includes a New Generation at Home Wax Warmers Electric Heater 500ml (1 Unit), Large Size Wooden Spatulas / Applicators (10pcs), 4 Pack of 100g Lavender & Honey flavored hard wax beans. This is everything that I need to get the job done.
The wax warmer is very simple to operate. All you have to do is plug it in and set the temperature. It has some awesome features too. The warmer has an insert with a handle so removing the wax is super simple. The Warmer also has a post so I can balance the applicator stick on it so it's not sitting right in the wax.
One tip I have to offer when it comes to waxing eyebrows is you don't have to use the big wooden paddle if you are afraid of adding too much wax. The salon that does my waxing, uses toothpicks to add the wax to smaller areas.
I love my new warmer from Skinosm!
I received this product for a reduced price to facilitate this review. If you have any questions, please feel free to email me directly.

I've had my brows waxed just a few times in my life. I preferred plucking.
ReplyDeleteI've always plucked, never tried waxing. I've been a little intimidated by waxing, I guess. Still, this looks like a good product and I'd try it.
ReplyDeleteI have honestly never waxed before! I have heard different things, but I would definitely be willing to try it. Especially from the comfort of my own home.
