What Does It Mean To Man Up?

One of the most central things about modern society is the idea of what a man should or shouldn't be. From "boys don't cry" to "you throw like a girl!" to "man up!" there seems to be this inherent judgment around whether or not someone fits into the idea of what a man is supposed to be. But what does being a man even mean in the modern era? After all, a lot of the power structures that have kept men in charge throughout history are falling away and there's more equality now than ever before. So that raises the question: when the definition of manhood is always changing, how do you man up?

Get some style

For the longest time, there's been something of a stereotype that men don't really care about style or fashion. They're far too busy chopping down trees and eating steak to worry about any of that! But the truth is that plenty of men have been embracing style for years and there are plenty of ways to do it. From getting a well-tailored suit to something more drastic like men's laser hair removal, there are always options out there for any man who wants to make himself just a little more stylish. That way, whether it's a first day or a job interview, you'll always know that you're dressed for success.

Take care of yourself

Sure, there's an image in society of the guy who just likes to lounge around on the couch with a beer watching TV. And let's face it, who doesn't like being able to do those things? But if you don't want to end up looking exactly like Homer Simpson, it's a good idea to start making the effort to take care of yourself a little better than he does. Simple things like eating right and getting regular exercise aren't going to be that much of a disruption to your life, but they will make your life as a whole a lot more pleasant.

Take responsibility

Look, this might sound harsh but if you're a guy who sits around waiting for the world to deal with all of his problems, you need to sort yourself out. From going after the things you want in life to helping out with things like cooking and housework, a real man is one who is willing to do his part for himself and for his family. Sure, there are those who think that it's not their place to cook or clean, but those kinds of attitudes are dying out pretty fast.

Of course, none of this is to say that being a man is bad or that doing things that are traditionally "manly" is wrong in any way. The truth is that you don't have to make a choice between being a traditional man and whatever version of manhood is on the horizon. Most of us are actually capable of being both of those things and more. That's the real truth of being a man, you get to be whatever you want!
