Four Important Things to do in the First Week of Pregnancy

If you’ve recently made the discovery that you are pregnant, those first few ecstatic days might be spent in shock, phoning everyone and posting pregnancy selfies on Instagram. Once you’ve recovered from that initial rush, it’s wise to start looking into what you should do at the start of your pregnancy. Here’s a quick to-do list to help you make sure you get your pregnancy off to a happy and healthy start.

Work Out The Due Date

We all know a baby’s normal term is nine months, but how do you work out the actual due date? The easiest way is to use an online due date calculator. And no, contrary to popular belief, you do not need to know the date of conception in order to calculate the due date. All you need to know is the date that your most recent period began, and the average number of days in your cycle (most women’s cycle sits at 28 days, but slightly more or less is not uncommon). Just as setting the date makes your wedding planning feel more real, once you know when to expect your baby, you can start putting your life in order.

Call Your Doctor

We usually go to the doctor when we’re ill. Pregnancy is a unique time when you get to call your GP’s office with good news about your health: you’ve managed to conceive! Booking your first GP appointment is the starting point of your antenatal care. Your appointment typically won’t be until week eight to ten of your term, but if you want to connect with a medical professional like a midwife straight away, you are welcome to do so. Ask your GP about how referrals work in your local area.
Do Your Homework

While your GP and midwife will talk you through what to expect during your pregnancy, it’s a good idea to do your own research. There will be a lot to take in during those first few weeks, so it’s well worth getting your head around a few of the key decisions you will have to make between now and holding your baby for the first time. Bloomlife explains the importance of prenatal tests, and many well-regarded pregnancy blogs offer helpful perspectives on everything from c-sections to hypnobirthing.

Check in With Your Health

There is nothing like finding out that you’re expecting a baby to make you start thinking about your own health. Now is a great time to take stock of your body, and understand what you need to do in order to be healthier. Start by working out your BMI and taking steps to adjust your diet and exercise if you need to gain or lose a few pounds. Give some thought to your caffeine intake: do you need those three lattes every day? While you may have had the attitude that small things don’t matter so much, now that you’re expecting, those little lifestyle factors may start to seem more important, and that’s great, both for your sake and for the health of your baby.

Whether you were expecting it or not, discovering that you’re pregnant can be a shock. These tips will help you come out of that initial dreamy state and take those first important steps for your baby’s health.
