8 Natural Remedies For A Sore Throat

Sore throats can be nasty, making it difficult to swallow, eat and drink. We don’t tend to realize how often we swallow until we are no longer able to do so without pain, so if you’ve got an itchy, scratchy or painful throat then here are 8 natural remedies that may ease your suffering. Remember, if your sore throat worsens or doesn’t begin to get better naturally, then you may need to see a specialist ENT doctor for further treatment.

Saltwater

Mix half a teaspoon of salt into a glass of room temperature water and then gargle to help reduce swelling at the back of the mouth and tonsils. Saltwater is also antibacterial and can help to kill germs - just remember to always spit and never to swallow. Repeat up to 3 times a day.

Honey

Honey has long been used to help ease a sore throat and is a common ingredient in many sore throat remedies. Honey helps to coat the back of the throat, easing pain, whilst some varieties are also antibacterial, having medicinal benefits. Try mixing a spoonful into your herbal tea.

Lemon

Lemon is a common ingredient paired with honey and provides a boost of vitamin C whilst also soothing a scratchy throat. Try squeezing half a lemon into a glass and adding in a teaspoon of honey before topping with hot water. Sip gently to stay hydrated whilst also receiving valuable nutrients from the lemon and the sugar.

Herbal teas

Herbal teas such as chamomile and green tea are a great way to stay hydrated when you have a sore throat. The steam helps to humidify your nasal passage and the warm water helps to soothe a sore throat. Try to stay away from milk products as these can cause an overproduction of mucus in the throat.

Garlic

Garlic contains a compound that can help to fight bacteria in the throat. If you’re brave enough, try chomping on a raw clove, or alternatively just give one a gentle suck at the side of your cheeks, this will release the compound without the spicy flavor.

Apple cider vinegar

Apple cider vinegar isn’t for everyone but has a very high level of acidity that can help to kill germs and bacteria. Don’t drink it neat as it will burn your delicate throat, instead mix 1 tablespoon with a glass of warm water and a teaspoon of honey to improve the taste and then sip gently.

Ice

Ice can be very soothing on a sore throat, and many people swear by sucking on ice-cubes or ice-pops. Even sipping on a nice tall glass of ice-water can help and it will keep you hydrated too.

Steam

Steam can dramatically improve a sore throat and reduce its duration, especially if it is one caused by dryness. Try having a hot shower or bath or simply holding your head over a bowl of steaming hot water. Inhale deeply and let the steam moisten your nasal passages and throat.

These are just 8 natural remedies to try if your throat feels like it is full of razor blades, and remember, some over the counter pain relief or throat spray could help too and if things worsen then always consult a doctor. What home remedies have you tried?
