Sleep deprivation is one of the most common problems people face these days. Strangely, it’s also one of the most damaging things for our health. People think that a lack of sleep just makes us tired, but it does a lot more than that. As such, you have to try and change the situation, ensuring that you get enough shut-eye when you go to bed.
Unsurprisingly, there are many reasons you might suffer from a lack of sleep. Some of these are self-imposed, while others are somewhat out of your control. Either way, here are the most common reasons for sleep deprivation:
Too much noise in your room
If there’s too much noise in your room, then you’ll always struggle to sleep. Unfortunately, noise levels are largely out of your control. If you live in a busy area of the city, then you may get lots of outside noise seeping in. It’s hard to relax if you can hear cars beeping, trains going by, people shouting, music from the neighbors, etc. When you do drift off, you can be woken up by a loud noise that disrupts your sleep cycle!
To solve this, you can do three things. Firstly, invest in some earplugs to block out the noise. Secondly, try and soundproof your room as best as you can. Thirdly, move house. Hopefully, it doesn’t come to this, but if the first two options don’t help, then it could be your only chance at getting sleep.
You have an underlying medical condition
Health issues are a common cause of sleep deprivation. Mental health issues like stress, depression, and anxiety will all keep you awake at night. Most of them cause insomnia, which is the term given to a condition where you struggle to fall asleep.
There are other health problems as well. Did you know that one of the tinnitus health effects is that it causes sleep deprivation? If you have a constant ringing in your ears, then it’s impossible to feel settled at night. Thankfully, this can be solved by using hearing aids or getting treatment from an audiologist.
Sleep apnea is another common health condition that stops you from sleeping properly. You need to see a doctor about any health concerns and get them sorted out if you want to restore your natural sleep cycle.
You’re getting too much screen time
Staring at screens all day can have a profound effect on your quality of sleep. Things like smartphone and laptop screens emit something called blue light. This type of light affects the brain and can make it hard for your mind to shut down at the end of the day. In turn, you stay awake for longer.
Also, staring at screens distracts you and means that time passes by. Before you know it, it’s 3 am and you’ve been scrolling through Twitter for 4 hours! So, cut down on your screen time - and maybe switch to a night-mode setting to reduce the amount of blue light you consume.
