Every country in the world implements a justice system, although some are visibly more unbalanced than others. For example, you could see a life sentence or even death for the smallest amount of marijuana in Thailand or a lengthy prison sentence for taking an “adult” magazine into Saudi Arabia. However, no matter where you go there are extremely common things you might be arrested for and each country has its own way of dealing with them.
In most “developed” nations, sometimes the punishment actually fits the crime, and being arrested for some things doesn't mean the end of the world and at some point or another, most of us can expect to have some interaction with law enforcement. But going about it the right way can directly impact what happens next.
Some of the most common arrests are for the following:
DUI
Domestic violence
Illicit drugs
DUI is an ever-increasing concern for law enforcement and they can come down hard on repeat offenders while domestic violence covers a lot of subjects and doesn’t always apply to spousal abuse and illicit drug possession is one of the most common arrests ranging from serious hard drugs to relatively harmless painkillers. For some crimes, you may be able to seek help from Attorney Stewart Salwin or a similar attorney near you, but this depends on the severity of your crime.
DUI
Driving while under the influence of alcohol is a dangerous and extremely serious charge that shouldn’t be excused under any circumstances. However, in most cases, an intoxicated driver is the victim of themselves since they may have an underlying larger alcohol abuse issue that requires treatment, counseling, and therapy.
Being arrested for a DUI is very common at around 1.5 million arrests per year in the United States alone, and while it is a serious charge it doesn’t mean the end of everything. First of all, you will need to retain counsel such as Takakjian & Sitkoff, LLP who specialize in such criminal subjects and your first punishment for a DUI is likely to be relatively lenient with a low rate fine and/or a very short jail term, which is canceled if you are granted probation but this can last for a few years and you may have your driving license suspended for a long time.
Domestic Violence
One of the most common crimes in the modern world is domestic violence, with over 2.3 million cases recorded (excluding children) in 2020 in the United Kingdom. The charge covers many areas and doesn’t only relate to spousal abuse, violence against women, or sexual abuse and you can be arrested under a domestic violence charge for relatively minor offenses such as having a loud argument, performing an action that causes someone distress or damaging a property.
Although many domestic violence charges are extremely serious, there are minor changes that are also classed as domestic violence and the offenses relate to abusive behavior towards a household member. Psychological abuse is also taken into account where control or bullying is an issue within a household or family and many of these are difficult to prove which can further exacerbate an overarching issue.
If you are a victim of domestic violence then you can seek advice from local charities and organizations.
Illicit Drugs
The use of drugs has seen a steady increase since the “War on Drugs” began and the most common include cannabis, prescribed opioids such as Tramadol and Oxycontin, and cocaine or diamorphine (heroin), with the deadly fentanyl also becoming a major issue in many cities all over the world. Each country has its own approach to dealing with drug abuse ranging from government-funded support and treatment programs as in Sweden to the successful “12 Step Program” in the United States, or the disastrous and non-deterring death penalty in Thailand.
Absent the possession of hard drugs such as heroin, crystal methamphetamine, crack cocaine, or powder cocaine itself, many drug charges are minor and will be dealt with by fines and relatively light punishment unless you are suspected of distribution. Should you find yourself arrested for drug possession then your best option is to fully cooperate with police and admit to the offense, in which case, unless you are a repeat offender you will normally be released with charges pending.
Seek local help from charities and organizations if you suffer from a drug problem and for advice on drugs and addiction please see this website.
