Ever find yourself asking the existential question, like cape vs cloak? Never fear, finding your own style is tricky. As a child, you were told what to wear, and then you reached adolescence, and (hopefully) you had to start choosing for yourself and displaying your own individual style (however good or bad). For some, the journey to finding what’s ‘right’ for them is easy - they either have an innate knowledge of what they like and what they want to look like, or they just don’t care.
Chances are, if you’re reading this, you’re looking for a little help! So, read on for some tips as to how you can find your own personal style, and enjoy dressing yourself for a change.
1. Find some inspiration
Now’s the time to do some serious people-watching. Take a seat in a coffee shop or train station and look around - what are people wearing? You can look for inspiration anywhere, be that from films, books, tv programs, fashion magazines, social media, or just people you see in the street. There’s so much amazing style to be found out there, you’ve just got to look.
If you feel overwhelmed or worried that you won’t find something to suit you, look for people who look similar to you and see what they’re wearing and how they’re wearing it.
2. Shop in your own wardrobe
Take a look at your own clothes. What do you like wearing? What clothes make you happy? What clothes have good memories? These are all just as valid questions to ask, alongside the traditional, ‘what looks good on me?’ that you’re used to asking.
Top tip: if you’re struggling to see what’s in your wardrobe, take it out and lay it on the floor. Now’s a great time to get rid of clothes that you don’t love anymore and create space for things that will bring you joy!
3. Play with accessories
Accessories can make or break an outfit, so they’re not to be ignored. They’re also a great way to have fun with fashion and make your mark. Maybe you could consider new sunglasses, a statement bag, or transform boring old jeans with a new belt? If you’re looking to be more environmentally or budget-friendly, new accessories can help your old clothes feel new and exciting.
4. Get a stylist
Stylists will help you find clothes that suit you, picking out pieces they think you’ll like, and essentially, helping you with your own personal style. This may sound extremely luxurious, but stylists aren’t just for celebrities! You can find specialist stylists online. There are even online stylists such as Stitch Fix who pick out clothes for you and will send them to you to try on at home.
Hopefully, this list has given you a couple of ideas to go away and try. After all, your style is individual to you, and you have a lifetime to find it. The most important thing is to have fun and find things that are comfortable and nice to wear.
