We really can include STEM
First of all, you guys know how much I love Pilot Pens. I share them with you every chance I get. I think they are amazing for everyday use and make amazing stocking stuffers for all ages. That is another contributing factor in why this post is so awesome to me! I'm going to share what I learned from the email and a little bit more digging on Google.
STEM is useful in everyday life doing things that we regularly do. You can help your kids with amazing life skills such as budgeting, balancing a bank account, baking, cleaning, problem-solving, and all sorts of things! STEM doesn't just mean toys.
It’s no secret that STEM education has become exceedingly important – after all, studies show that it sets the stage for kids’ future success! For National STEM Day (November 8), Pilot Pen is teaming up with STEM.org – the leaders STEM education – to help make STEM learning tools accessible and affordable through free, downloadable lesson plans that pair with Pilot’s STEM Authenticated™ line of erasable FriXion pens.
FriXion + STEM Background Info:
What is STEM?
STEM stands for Science Technology Engineering Mathematics and STEM Education refers to studying these areas with theoretical as well as a practical approach. The abbreviation was announced by the scientific administrators of the National Science Foundation (NSF) in the USA in 2001.
The email I received that started the whole thing:

FriXion + STEM Background Info:
- According to STEM.org, the simplest way to get kids interested in a future career in STEM is to expose them to concepts early on and keep demonstrations interesting and engaging for their age group.
- The FriXionSTEM.com lesson plans and accompanying video demonstrations – led by celebrated science educator and TikTok sensation, Phil Cook (@ChemTeacherPhil) – are designed to utilize FriXion's unique, thermo-sensitive erasable ink properties to demonstrate scientific principles in a way that is engaging, exciting, and accessible for each age group, whether at home or in a classroom.
- FriXion erasable pens, markers, and highlighters are the first and only writing instruments to earn STEM Authenticated™ status from STEM.org, the leaders in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM) education.
- FriXion helps to make STEM education accessible to all kinds of learners and provides a low-cost entry point for exposure and exploration of every day, interdisciplinary math and science concepts.
Along with all of the awesome information in the email, I was sent a science experiment to do at home to show how FriXion plays right into it. Are you ready for some science?
What's in the box?
- FriXion
- 1 6v battery
- Tape
- Wooden Sticks
- Foil
- Paper
- Rubber band
- Paper clips
- Clean head tacks
- Wires
- Erasers
- Plastic triangles
- Light bulb and holder
This is such a cool experiment! Kids will learn about and be able to see what conductors and insulators can do.
The super cool part of the process is seeing the FriXion pens do their part.
One of the ways you will be able to check the heat flow through the circuits is by using FriXion pens. By design, FriXion erasable pens, markers, and highlighters incorporate science, technology, and engineering. The unique heat-sensitive ink uses covalent bonds to help the ink to:
- Write smoothly in many different colors
- Be erased completely and become invisible when it's rubbed with the eraser or gets hotter than 140
- Reappear when the ink gets colder than 14.
To me, all of that is the magic of science!
This lesson plan is suitable for kids in grades 3-5. This is such a fun way to learn hands-on about conductors and insulators. This is perfect for at-home learners and classrooms.
A huge Thanks to STEM.org and Pilot Pens for letting us check this out. Check out their website and social pages to get the latest news and product releases!
I received this product for free as a gift. If you have any questions please feel free to email me directly.
