Tips for dressing for a special occasion

Have you got a special occasion coming up and are thinking about what to wear for it? Special occasions are perfect for dressing up and looking your best. Whether it’s a birthday, you are going away on holiday or a wedding, it gives you an excuse to put your best dress on, your favourite vintage jewelry and of course a nice pair of shoes.

To help inspire you for your next special occasion, we have put together a brief guide on three tips for dressing for the day. Keep on reading for our best advice and hopefully this will get you in the mood to start getting organised for when the occasion arrives.

Dress for the Occasion (But Stay True to Your Style)

Naturally we all have a style that suits us best. This can be a colour we wear, or the style of clothing. When dressing for a special occasion, you should be trying to match your style but also consider the type of event you’re attending. While it might sound obvious, aligning your outfit with the setting is key to getting it right. A floaty dress might feel perfect for a summer garden party or holiday evening, while something more structured works beautifully for a formal wedding or upscale dinner.

Accessorise Your Outfit

The trick is to accessorise your outfit but without overdoing it. Accessorising is perfect for adding another dynamic to your appearance. You can wear a watch (try to avoid smart watches for special occasions), or delicate jewellery or a single statement piece. Think vintage-inspired earrings, a fine chain necklace, or a structured clutch that ties everything together. You may also want to wear a nice bracelet as a way to complete your outfit.

Choose the right footwear

Your footwear plays a big role in completing your outfit. Depending on where your event is, it can normally be very flexible. For example, if your holiday is in the Caribbean, you could wear sandals. If you are at a wedding, you might lean towards heels or polished dress shoes, whilst you can be more casual if your special occasion is a birthday - smart trainers can sometimes work. Think about how much walking you are going to do, as you don’t want to be wearing big heels if you are going to be on your feet all day. Plus if you are traveling, big heels can be hard to pack.

Dressing for a special occasion should feel exciting, not overwhelming. Give yourself time to prepare and don’t be scared to order a few things and try them on at home - you can always send them back if they don’t work. It can also be useful asking a friend for advice on what you are planning on wearing as they will always be truthful.
