Eye Exam Awareness Month is August. Do your kids have glasses or any corrective lenses? When was the last time they had an eye exam? Do you know how important kids eye health really is? In our family, almost everyone wears corrective lenses of some kind. Glasses and contacts. Think About Your Eyes (thinkaboutyoureyes.com) has an awesome and easy to use doctor locator, to find an optometrist near you.
Since I starting wearing glasses an early age, so I would be able to see well , I was not surprised that my kids need glasses too. Cassie is the worst of all. For 2 years we battled with her grades and concentration. We struggled so hard trying to get her to learn the material they were teaching at school to later find out, she needed glasses.
By the time we found out she needed glasses, we had to prepare ourselves for the potential eye patch to strengthen it up. Our eye doctor educated us on so many facts.
One that stuck out in my mind the most, if she didn't have her vision corrected by the time her eyes were done developing (about age 9), she would never be able to see a sharp image.
Experts say 5% to 10% of preschoolers and 25% of school-aged children have eye problems. Early identification of a child’s vision problems is crucial as, if untreated, can cause permanent vision loss. Cassie has a non-wandering lazy eye. That's where the patch came in. She was to patch her strong eye for a few hours a day so make it stronger. I am so happy we were able to find out early that her eyes needed help.
Nearly 24% of parents wait for their child to have symptoms before taking them to an eye doctor. I was one of those parents. Cassie was in preschool and had a hard time with her letters and the school eye exam didn't show anything wrong. We got an "inconclusive" letter sent home. Her dyslexia made any testing a challenge. It was her preschool teacher that recommended that we get the eye exam done. Her eyes were completely different.
Only 40% of parents feel that an eye exam is a key part of a child’s healthy checkup schedule, yet roughly 80% say an annual trip to the dentist and pediatrician are essential. Scheduling a comprehensive eye exam before school starts in the fall allows for an optometrist to catch and correct any vision problems that may interfere with learning. Parents can’t wait for their children to say they aren’t seeing well as children don’t know what “normal” vision is.In this Eye Exam Awareness Month, set your child(ren) up for success by prioritizing their eye health! Think About Your Eyes is a national public awareness campaign that promotes the benefits of eye health, urging people to get annual comprehensive eye exams. I am so happy to be working with them to get the word out.
Here is a video I want to share with you about what it's like to live with poor vision.
