Saving Money Around the House when you Have Kids

Saving money when you have kids can be difficult. You may feel as though there are new expenses every single week and that you can’t even begin to budget. If this sounds like you then it is important to know that there are a few things you can do to cut down on the cost.

Use Childcare Vouchers

Believe it or not, one of the biggest costs for parents is actually childcare. If you’re going back to work after having a child then it is worth talking to your employer to find out if you qualify for any preschool vouchers. A lot of companies will help you to make sure that you get the support you need, and they may even be able to help you save a small fortune too.

Plan your Meals in Advance

If you have had a very long day, it can be tempting for you to pick up a takeaway for the whole family. This can really add up and it can become a huge cost too. If you want to help yourself here, then you need to avoid the temptation and plan your meals in advance. It also helps to freeze any bulk meals that you cook too, as this will help you to cut back on the amount that you need to buy during the week.

Buy Reusable Items

Disposable items such as paper towels might be cheap and convenient, but the price can add up over time. One way for you to get around this would be for you to buy towels that are reusable, or washable. They can last for years if you wash them often. Cloth diapers might also be a consideration. They are way better for the environment and they are super convenient too. Sure, you might have to be a little more organized when it comes to your changing regime but all in all, they are a fantastic investment.

Buy Items Second-Hand

Children grow out of clothing or even shoes quickly. This means that parents are always having to think ahead, and this can become expensive. If you want to help yourself here, then it helps to check with your friends or even your family so you can see if they have anything they can pass down. Thrift stores are also ideal because they often have great items on sale. If you do have a new child, then you should always buy car seats and even cribs brand-new. The main reason for this is because there are tons of safety regulations and they are always changing so you need to make sure that you take this into account.

Consider Nanny Sharing

If you need to hire a babysitter- why not think about asking someone else if they could benefit from the service too? If you have a friend who has a child, then arrange for the nanny to look after them both at the same time. This will literally half the cost and it will make it way easier and way less stressful too.

  2. These are fantastic ideas, thanks for sharing! My oldest daughter is 10 and my youngest is 5, so I really like being able to have hand me downs. It also helps to buy used or on sale.
