3 Ways To Help A Down-In-The-Dumps Friend

We've all been there.

Life is tough at times, so we can all experience those 'down-in-the-dumps' moments. We might have had a bad day at work. We could be having relationship troubles. And there could be hundreds of other reasons, both large and small, as to why we are feeling down.

During these difficult times, we rely on our friends to help us. By having them around, we needn't suffer for long. And so it is with the friends in our lives. When they are feeling down, we should be there to help them. How? Well, you probably don't need us to tell you what to do, but we have some suggestions just in case you ever feel short of inspiration.

#1: Listen to your friend

You don't have to solve all of your friend's problems. Giving advice might not always be the appropriate thing to do. But what you can do is listen. Sometimes, being that person that your friend can offload to is all it takes to help them. They might get a better perspective on their problems when they get them out in the open, and they might simply feel better knowing that another person understands what they are going through. So, don't worry if you don't have the right words to say. Just listen, as that might make a world of difference to their day.

#2: Surprise your friend with a gift

Okay, so a bunch of flowers won't solve all of their problems. And the same applies to any other gift you might give your friend. But what a gift will do is raise their spirits. A gift will show them that you have had the forethought to care. So, surprise your friend with something they might like, perhaps by visiting sites such as With Our Aloha if flowers seem like a good idea, or by visiting any other online or offline store that sells the items your friend will appreciate.

#3: Encourage your friend to make healthy lifestyle choices

When you're feeling down, what becomes of your lifestyle? Do you spend time wallowing at home in front of the television? Do you eat comfort foods you know aren't good for you? Do you commit to bad habits, such as smoking and drinking, to counter your negative moods? Many of us do by default, but it's a no-brainer to suggest that these lifestyle choices might only make us feel worse in the long-term. Therefore, encourage your friend to make healthy lifestyle choices. Get them off the sofa and out into the fresh air for a gentle walk or some other form of exercise. Invite them over to your home for a healthy meal, or freeze portions of your home-cooked meals to give to your friend. And try to steer your friend away from any bad habits, perhaps by distracting them with conversation and fun activities. By encouraging a healthier lifestyle, your friend might then have the resources to lift herself up from her down state with her better frame of mind.

So, we hope these simple tips have been useful to you, but let us know what you think. What do you do to help your friends when they are feeling down-in-the-dumps? Share your inspirational ideas in the comments section below.
