How To Protect Your Senses

If there is one thing that we each have to protect, it’s our senses. We often take for granted how readily we can see, smell, taste, feel and hear - until we can’t anymore. Imagine being able to see clearly your whole life and then dealing with sight declining without warning. It’s scary and it can happen at any time to any of your senses. The last thing that you want to have to do is spend your life neglecting your sight and your ability to hear, only to reap what you sow in old age.

So, it’s important that you start to protect your senses from a young age. You have to work on it young so that you are not affected too quickly. For example, regular eye tests and the right vitamins in your diet will help you to ensure that your eyes don’t deteriorate. You could learn more about how often to go for a hearing test to keep your ears in check. It’s all in the effort that you put into your health, and as each of our senses can be affected as we age, it’s important that we do what we can to protect them.

Eyes.

You need your eyes every single day, and while you adapt with glasses and with guides to help you when you lose your sight, it’s important that you preserve your eye function as much as possible. The pupil in your eye can shrink by a third by the time we hit 60, so it’s vital that we have regular eye tests and we preserve our health. That means no smoking and wearing sunglasses where you can! Slowing down the worsening of the eye is so important.

Ears.

Next, we need to think about the way we hear. Over time, exposure to loud noises can affect the way that your ears send sound to your brain. Tinnitus is a common condition that affects us when we’ve been exposed to too much loud noise for too long. A genetic predisposition to hearing loss also doesn't help, either! With regular hearing tests as we age, we can be aware of the situation in our eardrums, and we can do things to help to preserve our hearing, too. You need to consider the actions that you can take, such as not being exposed to loud noise or using cotton buds to clean your ears, to help!

Taste.

The number of taste buds in the mouth decline as we age and it may be the case for you that you need more concentrated flavours to taste more as you get older. The more you look after your nutrition, the better your health will be and the more healthy your tastebuds. Smoking dulls the taste in your mouth, as does poor oral hygiene. So, look after both of these and you will be looking after your taste better!

Of course, there are also touch and smell to consider, but these three senses are the most important to look after when you are trying to preserve your body. A healthy diet, healthy environment and plenty of sleep and hydration should help!
