Choosing Safe Swimwear for the Beach

With winter finally receding, you’re probably looking forward to a beach holiday. On a trip to the beach, the last thing on your mind may be sun safety. However, with skin cancer on the rise, it’s critical that your swimsuit not only looks good but keeps you safe, too. Today we take a look at some of the options you have to stay safe and look great.

If you want a traditional suit, then be sun smart

Your heart may be set on a traditional bikini or one-piece, and that’s just fine! You can still be sun-smart and safe. You’re going to need to find a sun protection partner that feels good on the skin but protects you. Don’t use anything less than an SPF 50 in a beach sunscreen. Ideally, it should feel light and non-greasy on the skin, as you don’t want to get sand stuck all over you. Other key characteristics to look for are:

UVA protection: This can be indicated by UVA in a circle, or the words ‘broad-spectrum’. UVA rays are responsible for aging the skin, so you want to play it safe

Water resistance: All sunscreen will need to be reapplied every two hours while you’re at the beach. A water-resistant sunscreen will keep you safe in the water as well as out of it. Water acts as a magnifying glass, burning the skin even though you won’t be aware of it

Remember that sunscreen isn’t an excuse to go wild in the sun. Invest in a chic and stylish broad-brimmed hat, and stick to the shade as much as possible.

Sun smart and stylish swimsuit choices

It’s wise to use high-quality SPF sunscreen at the beach regardless. However, there’s a wide range of gorgeous modern swimsuits that are stylish while still covering more skin and keeping you safe from the sun’s burning rays, especially if you are on a spontaneous trip. Here are just a few of the options open to you.

Rashguards

Once the realm of the hardcore surfer, these fun and practical swimwear tops are a great way to wear a more modest two piece and still say sun safe. As an added extra, you’ll look like you live on the beach, too, as all the pros use these.

‘Burkinis’

While this top-to-toe covering swimsuit is typically associated with modesty wear, it’s also great protection from the ravages of the sun. Many are embracing it as a way to go worry-free to the beach, especially if you have already had a brush with skin cancer and want to stay super safe.

Stylish modesty swimsuits

The look of the burkini isn’t your only modest swimsuit option. Here we have traditional swimwear for any occasion, and it’s a superb example of how glamorous full-body suits can be.

Sporty half-suits

On the other end of the spectrum, we have shoulder-to-thigh suits you typically associate with the Olympics. There’s a reason sports people prefer these easy-to-wear and practical protective suits, and you’re sure to be hooked too.

There’s plenty of sun-safe suit alternatives to keep you looking and feeling great on the beach. Don’t forget to pack the sunscreen (and this nifty waterproof speaker) and have tons of fun!
