For some of us that’s listening to music, for some it’s sewing or knitting, and for some, it’s getting outside and getting sweaty. All in all, we all have our own thing to make us happy, and that's why even the youngest children in your family should pick up hobbies of their own.
Usually, kids come across these naturally as they grow, but maybe you’ve got a fussy 6 or 7-year old whose attention tends to flit? This is the post for you!
Collecting
Are your kids always picking up things when you go on walks? Maybe they love finding stones at the beach? Maybe you’re constantly looking out for bugs they like to bring into the house? Well, this is a good sign a hobby is slowly forming - collecting items is a great way to spend your time, and can be done inexpensively throughout your entire life.
Put up a shelf for them, provide them with glass jars, get them a book to put pressed flowers in - whatever it is they’re into, ensuring they’ve got the materials to do it safely and in a fun way is key.
Learning An Instrument
Kids love to have fun, and they’re always naturally creative. And we tend to forget that as adults. Kids have wider and more rich imaginations than us, and they have so much to do with it without worrying what other people will think or whether they’re going to be mocked for what they make.
So encourage that, and see if they’re interested in learning an instrument! Put an instrument in front of them, explain what it does, and then let them go wild. You can even print off the Adele To Be Loved Sheet Music and help them follow along with it. If they find it a fun activity to do, you can then think about getting them a teacher or signing them up for classes.
Caring for Plants and Animals
Maybe you’ve got a pet already? Maybe the kids really want one? These are both prime opportunities for encouraging an animal care hobby. Take them along to a shelter to donate food or toys, make cleaning out the hamster cage fun - there are many ways to encourage this caring spirit.
Or, if your little one loves the outside world, make sure they’ve got their own pair of gardening gloves to use. The green world is a marvelous one when you’re young, and handing them a trowel and a seed packet can inspire a lifetime of love for nature.
If your kids need a hobby, make sure you keep ideas like those above in mind! Kids take to new things to do very easily, so try them all out if need be.
