Your mobile device is a crucial part of your life. But in certain circumstances, it can get you into trouble. So, you need to switch off your phone to avoid social faux pas or worse.
Driving Your Car
With careless driving, your car is nothing more than a high-speed and heavy weapon capable of inflicting massive damage to people and property. If you are impaired in any way, through drink or drugs, you will almost certainly crash. As careless as drink-driving is, the mobile phone has contributed to an increase in the distracted driving accident. The US National Safety Council reports that mobile phones cause over 1.5 million road accidents when calling or texting per year. Switch it off or put it on silent to avoid potentially severe consequences.
Operating Heavy Machinery
Like driving, operating heavy machinery requires all your attention and focus. Any diversion from your task could cause severe injury or death. Cranes, cement mixers, and tractors are prime examples. Under no circumstances should you use machines like these if you take drowsy medications or illicit drugs. But you should also consider leaving your phone in your car or locker if your job means you need to operate powerful devices. No call is worth risking the life of others, and if a call is important, the caller will call you again later on.
Watching a Cinema Movie
If you have ever made a sound at the cinema, all seriousness aside, you know your life could be in severe danger. Sneezing as Bridget Jones and some English guy kiss could have severe social consequences. And one can only imagine the gasps of disdain if a phone were to ring as Ana Steele and Mr. Gray do what consenting adults do. However, as funny as this sounds, turning off your phone at the cinema is just good manners. And as we know from Colin Firth in Kingsman: The Secret Service, manners maketh the man (or woman).
Dealing with a Client
You shouldn’t really be using your phone at work, but it might be necessary for some jobs. Even in meetings depending on your role. However, you should never use your phone when dealing with a client. Apart from being plain rude, it is so unprofessional that it will cause the client to leave your business. And if you are dealing with a potential client, you can kiss that contact goodbye. Think about it. Would you want to do business with someone who interrupts the conversation to answer a call? Didn’t think so. Put it on silent and put it away.
When Sleeping
A good night’s sleep is vital for a healthy life. Eight hours per night is recommended by experts. However, some people feel they only need five, others ten. Just try to find whatever works best for you. Once you know your perfect amount, you need to ensure sleep isn’t interrupted. Interrupted sleep stops you from getting the restfulness you need. Apart from noisy neighbors, too much light, or stress, your phone is one of the things that can keep you awake. Fortunately, most phones come with sleep mode, where you can set quiet times between your sleep hours.
Summary
You might feel you need your phone active all the time. But using it can be a massive social disgrace when at work or in public. But using your phone can also be dangerous when driving.
